If you live in Norfolk, then the Barber name is synonymous with funerals. I met with Racheal, third generation Barber to manage the business and was intrigued to hear about how it all started.

Gordon Barber – Family History

Gordon Barber was born in Lowestoft in 1922 and grew up in Kirkley where his fascination with Funeral Service grew as he watched local undertakers with their Horses and Carriages conducting funerals in Kirkley Cemetery.

Initially, Gordon became a boat builder, building motor torpedo boats during World War 2 and afterwards moved on to manage a significant building firm. However, his interest in funerals had not diminished and this found him moving, with his wife, Elsie, and son, Graham, to Newcastle where he could become a Funeral Director.

From boat builder to funeral director

After moving back to Norfolk, Gordon realised the first of his dreams to start a building firm of his own. That business is still operating today under the third generation in Gordon’s Grandson, Stuart. However, as so many Funeral Directors came out of the building trade it was perhaps inevitable that eventually his early love of funeral directing was to see Gordon open his own funeral business, co- founded with his son, Graham, and later joined by Gavin.

In the following 40 plus years, Gordon Barber funeral homes have developed and constantly strived to maintain its reputation for providing a professional service delivered with care, compassion and sensitivity. They are proud of the market leading position they hold in Norwich which is in no small part due to our absolute commitment to Excellent Funeral Service.

Graham Barber is now a Consultant to the funeral homes which are managed by his daughter, Rachael. He has a wealth of experience in the funeral profession having co-founded and managed the family business and having also held the position of Managing Director of the country’s leading funeral services and crematoria group. Graham was also National Public Relations Officer for the funeral profession and was privileged to be elected President of The National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) in 1990.

Rachael Barber is the third generation of the family to manage Gordon Barbers. She said:

“Whilst our business has grown we are very proud of our heritage and our hand picked colleagues. My colleagues and I focus entirely on service and consider it a great privilege to be entrusted by the bereaved with caring for the deceased. Whilst we support and guide them through this very difficult time, we are committed to being respectful and compassionate; to give all the time needed and deliver honest  clear and straightforward information. We fully explain the financial implications of the decisions taken and will always provide the very best in care and personal service.”
