Advice re moving area for care home

Asked by

Can I please ask if anyone has had any experience with re-locating their parent to a care home in a different part of the uk …in particular how one council area then funds the cost ( or part) in a different region.

My mum is yet to go into a home, but the decision coming very soon based on current circumstances, we have read and been told a move to another area is possible , but just trying to get our heads round the logistics of how this would get organised as the local authorities presumably have limited information / links and contacts about homes in other parts of country.

Does the family pretty much have to do all the ground work in sourcing options for the home – or is there a network of information re which homes accept care packages from other regions etc ?

Many thanks in advance for any tips or advice

    Hi Julie,

I am in the process of doing this at the moment. I am moving my Dad from one county to another. County councils have reciprocal agreements about funding care when someone moves to another county. I am moving my Dad to be near me where the care is more expensive, his current social worker says that they will pay the extra and his whole care package still comes under their county.
My Dad’s social worker did not know any of the homes near me so I went to look at them all myself and found the ones that would accept the ‘local authority rate’, and that I liked.
Have a look at http://www.carehome.co.uk to start with. You can put in the area you will be looking for care in, and if it is a ‘care home’ or ‘nursing home’ etc that you need. It will also tell you a bit about the home. You can also read reviews and ratings but it is so important to go and look at any home yourself. There is also this directory that lists all of the homes that you can look at online or order a free copy. This link is for Norfolk, but just set your own county etc.
The whole searching for care things is quite new to me! It has all happened in the last 6 months, but I have had to search for all of the information myself. Please ask if you have any more questions.

Thank you so much Mia, some useful links there.
