Vascular dementia and sleep

Asked by

Hi
I care for my 85 yr old mum who has had a diagnosis of vascular dementia for some 18 months. The trickiest thing to deal with is her sleeping pattern. She is now pretty much nocturnal so when she sleeps in the day it can be anything upto 11 plus hours.
Has anyone else had similar experience and maybe offer some tips please

Is there any way of keeping her occupied during the day?

Hi Matts – sorry for the slow response. I’ve looked on various websites – Alzheimer’s Society, Demetia UK and they’re all saying similar things which may or may not be useful. Another one to read – https://www.unforgettable.org/blog/13-ways-to-sleep-well-when-you-have-dementia/ – I hope you find the help you need. Maybe you could also try and see if there is an Admiral Nurse in your area? They are run by Dementia UK and are specialist nurses. Let us know how you get on.
