Personal alarm systems are a popular and widely used form of assistive technology. They allow elderly people to live independently for longer as help is on hand if need be. Careline are a popular supplier personal alarms across the UK. The Careline service includes an alarm base unit which plugs into the telephone and a pendant to be worn. Once installed, the user will be connected to a 24/7 care team ready to help in an emergency. A careline personal alarm system costs £125 a year, with the first three months free.
You can make a referral to Careline on behalf of your elderly relative if you feel they would benefit from the service.

Forestcare provide lifeline alarms. The system connects a small pendant to the home phone system to a dedicated control centre which runs 24/7. On the pendant is a red button which can in turn alert the control centre in the event of distress.
Forestcare can install alarm systems in all six councils in Berkshire. In Bracknell Forest, the system costs £4 per week, and in other areas it costs £4.26 per week.
Demonstration and installation is free, with no obligation to sign up. Forestcare staff are experienced and friendly with local knowledge. The firm has high customer satisfaction among elderly residents of Berkshire.

Free Berkshire Fire & Rescue Service Home Safety Visits:
Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service offer free Safe and Well visits to eligible residents. Anyone who is aged over 65 or has limited mobility is deemed eligible.
A Safe and Well visit involves a fire risk assessment to identify hazards and how these can be mitigated. Smoke alarms are also tested, and replaced or installed if need be. The visit will take place in the home and can be arranged at a convenient time.
