When a loved one dies, you may want to think about memorial masonry. A lasting memorial can provide great comfort when a loved one has died.
Grassby & Sons have a proud family history as both funeral directors and as craftsmen in stone, granite, marble and slate.
It was almost 160 years ago that Benjamin Grassby moved to Dorset from Lincolnshire in 1861. Benjamin, a stone carver, was responsible for a lot of the stone carving in many Dorset churches during the Gothic revival of the late 19th Century, which can still be seen today.
The family stonemasonry business continued down through the generations and today a member of the latest generation, William Grassby, works in the stonemasonry part of the business.
In association with Grassby Stonemason of Dorchester, we are able to supply and install new memorials and plaques which are available in a wide range of natural stones, marble, granite and slate.
Renovation work and additional inscriptions to existing memorials is also undertaken.
Choosing your memorial
Our brochure is available on request which contains a variety of different memorial designs and materials.
Your choice of memorial is by no means limited to those shown in our brochures. Our craftsmen can design and produce any memorial to your specific requirements and a diagram can be produced showing the overall effect before the work is commenced.
Churchyard or cemetery regulations will almost certainly have restrictions on the type of material or size of memorial permitted. One of our experienced members of staff will be available to give you advice or guidance in selecting the right stone and inscription to comply with these regulations.
The highest standards
Before selecting a memorial mason to undertake the work, we recommend that you ensure they are an approved member of NAMM (National Association of Memorial Masons). We are a full member of NAMM and are therefore required to uphold the high standards of business practice, ethics and craftsmanship which are expected of all its members.
In addition we are still a family run business and one of the few memorial masons around today who can still craft a random slab of stone in our own workshop to produce an individual memorial of your choice. You can therefore be guaranteed the highest standard of workmanship.
Inscriptions and Lettering
After the memorial has been chosen, careful thought should be given to the composition and arrangement of the inscription.
A member of our experienced staff will be able to advise and guide you in selecting the most appropriate wording or text and in particular a layout which will complement the shape of the headstone.
To assist you in this process, we are able to provide a draft inscription layout for your approval before any work is commenced.
The traditional skills of our stonemasons, combined with modern technology, allow us to design and create a memorial to precise individual requirements. This can include any personal design or ornamentation carved into the stone.
A draft layout can be supplied showing the overall effect before any work is commenced.
