There are a number of companies that provide a cooked meal home delivery service which can be very useful for people living on their own, or who are not able to cook for themselves.
For advice on food, nutrition and healthy eating, Dorset For You’s encyclopaedic My Life My Care website, has several helpful sections, including:
Change 4 Life, which has helpful hints and tips for a healthy diet and some healthy recipes.
LiveWell Dorset, a free service for adults who would like support to change their lifestyle, providing information to help you to manage your weight, increase your physical activity and reduce your alcohol intake.
There is also a helpful directory of ready meal delivery services across Dorset on My Life My Care. Most of these providers serve a specific area – Cook Dorchester or Cook Bournemouth , for example, deliver to their surrounding areas, with a minimum order of £30 and the food arrives frozen.
Eggardon Country Cooks delivers a freshly cooked two course lunch to Bridport, Beaminster and surrounding rural areas; Collins Catering Services delivers similar right across the Bournemouth-Poole conurbation and up to Blandford. Lovely lunches based at Symondsbury, delivers hot lunches in a 12 mile radius of Bridport from Monday to Friday.
Agincare Home Cuisine, which is based in Weymouth and delivers to DT4, DT5 and DT6, says it delivers meals in customised vans with temperature-controlled ovens to ensure meals are delivered at the correct temperature. Agincare, a national care home provider, which has its headquarters on Portland, also says its drivers check that customers have “an adequate supply of drinks.”
At Langton Matravers on the Purbecks, the Kings Arms runs a daily hot meals service for village residents.

Wiltshire Farm Foods
The best known ready meal delivery service is run by Wiltshire Farm Foods, founded in 1991 and now a national company. This company, whose vans will be familiar to many people, delivers frozen ready meals to any address in mainland UK, but still based in Wiltshire. There is no charge for the delivery.
The system is flexible, in terms of who can order (ie you can order for a neighbour or relative, or for yourself) and there is a wide choice, with more than 300 ready meals, including traditional and contemporary dishes, healthier options, gluten-free, vegetarian, etc. There is also a “Softer Foods” range for people with smaller appetites, and those unable to bite or chew more substantial food.
The meals have a rather institutional feel – they look colourful on the website, but the reality is less exciting. However, this is a long-established company, with a good record, that provides balanced, properly cooked food, and at the very least, it is useful to have some Wiltshire Farm Foods meals in the freezer. You never know when weather or illness can prevent a carer or relative from getting to the house-bound, non-cooking elderly person, and an easy-to-cook meal (pop it in the microwave or oven, following simple clear instructions) can be a life-saver. www.wiltshirefarmfoods.com
