Daunted by the prospect of taking an elderly relative to a busy shopping mall in the run-up to Christmas? Intu Chapelfield in Norwich aims to make shopping as easy as possible for all concerned with our Christmas shopping survival guide!
If you’ve got a mum or dad who still likes to go out and do their own Christmas shopping – how can you best help them navigate their way through a busy shopping mall at this time of year?
There’s the mobility side of things to consider, for a start: intu Chapelfield in St Stephen’s Street, Norwich, has a dedicated Shopmobility Centre, which can be accessed on Level -1 of the car park, adjacent to the disable parking area. Wheelchairs and other mobility options are available and staff are always on hand to offer specialist advice on your needs (you can take your pick from a range of standard and powered wheelchairs, as well as powered scooters).
A year’s membership costs £6, with a charge of £4 per loan, although non-members can hire manual wheelchairs at £6 per day on a temporary basis, with a £25 returnable deposit. Shopmobility users are entitled to four hours free parking at intu Chapelfield (have your parking ticket validated at Shopmobility).
Having the right services and facilities available can help make Christmas shopping just that little bit easier. For example, intu Chapelfield has plenty of comfy seating areas for a quick sit down; there are cafes on every level; customer service staff are available to provide advice; and there are extended opening hours. Plus there are accessible toilet facilities and sensory aids available.
If your parents are coming by bus, the nearest stops are St Stephens Street itself or Norwich Bus Station. Sheridan Smith, the Marketing Manager at intu Chapelfield, offers this personal perspective: ‘My lovely Mum, who is 80 (but don’t tell her I told you!), loves shopping here because she can get the bus from her village right into the bus station – so it’s only a very short walk to intu Chapelfield. ‘And she refuses to buy anything that’s designed for older people, preferring to shop for quality items with style.’
Plus there’s parking for 1,000 cars, with 49 accessible spaces available. Sheridan adds: ‘A friend of mine, whose father uses a wheelchair, always comes to intu Chapelfield because her mother feels comfortable driving into our car park and using the spaces adjacent to the Welcome Halls so that they can easily get into the centre and enjoy a day of browsing, shopping and have lunch without having to go outside at all.’
The team at intu Chapelfield have come up with nine Christmas gift ideas to keep every generation of the family happy (and there is not a pair of slippers in sight!)
