Our Experience with the Careline365 GSM Alarm

In producing the Careline GSM Alarm, Careline365 have made a simple and effective tool to make sure people are safe at home and reassure their families, but also one that makes improvements on the vast majority of personal alarms that serve the same function and is future proofed.ย

Like many personal alarms designed for users to wear in the home, the Careline GSM Alarm consists of a base unit, that users can speak to a 24/7 response team through, and a pendant worn around the neck, that houses the SOS button that alerts the team. Should the wearer take a fall, or be in trouble for any other reason, all they need to do to get help is press the single button on the pendant. The pendant connects wirelessly to the base unit, that dials out to the 24/7 response team who are ready at a moment’s notice to ask the wearer if they’re okay and determine and contact the help they require. This could be simply asking a neighbour to check in, sending over a family member, or sending an ambulance to their house. It does this function extremely well.

However, where the Careline GSM Alarm differs from others is that the base unit does not require a landline connection (just mains power). This mean that if your parent doesn’t have a landline connection available in a suitable place, or at all, that they still get all the benefits of a personal alarm, without needing to pay for a more expensive mobile personal alarm. It also allows you the freedom to place the device much closer to the areas of the house where your parent is most at risk from falling, or where they spend most time.

Caroline's Experience: Hands on with the Careline GSM Alarm

We have a panel of older people who review products featured on Age Space. We asked Caroline, 74, from London, to live with the alarm for a few days and test it thoroughly.ย

She ordered the alarm from Careline365, used it for a week and afterwards we asked her some questions based on her experience. Click on each question to open her answer.

How was setting the Careline GSM Alarm up?

The alarm was easy to unpack from the box and the step-by-step instructions were very clear and easy to follow. It connected immediately and I did the recommended tests. These were answered quickly and clearly by an operator.

Where did you set the alarm up?

Well... wherever I liked! I ended up with it downstairs as I spend a fair bit of time in the garden. I also think that the most likely place I am to fall is down the stairs, so I was reassured that the base unit would be close by. Not having to plug it in to a landline allowed me the freedom to put it anywhere there was a plug in the wall.ย

Did it work throughout your house and garden and in the bath?

I did one test from the end of the garden, and another from the loft conversion in my house. It worked well from both places and I could hear it ringing which was most reassuring. I also tested it in the shower and it appears to be totally waterproof. As many falls happen in the shower or bath this is necessary.ย

How did you find wearing and using the pendant?

I wore the alarm as a pendant and it was comfortable to wear. The alarm button is easy to locate and to press, but not so easy that false alarms would be a problem.ย

What happened when you tested the alarm?

When I pressed the button on the pendant, the base unit dialed out and within seconds someone asked me if I was okay and used my name. Their voice came through loud and clear and they could hear me from the other room. They were very friendly and glad to hear that it was just a test!ย

How would you use the Careline GSM Alarm?

I'm still a very active person and love my walking (I just got new walking boots!) so I would probably also look into adding the GO GPS alarm to my package, and in fact a key safe. This alarm is great for in the home but I'd also like for my door to remain intact should an ambulance need to be called - hence the keysafe!

Overall what do you think?

This system is very simple to install and to use and I think that it would give both the house bound user and their relatives confidence that should the need arise, then they (the 24/7 response team) would be alerted and help would come.

Looking for Fall Detection or GPS Tracking?

The basic pendant talked about in our review does not include fall detection or GPS tracking as it is a simple alam. If you need an alarm that will work out of the house and includes fall detection, GPS tracking, and enables the wearer to speak to the response team directly through the alarm, Careline365 recommends the GO GPS.
