Care homes in Essex

You may be looking for a care home in Essex perhaps in a hurry or planning ahead to see what is available.  “Does it pass the Mum test” will be an important criteria: would your Mum (or Dad) be happy to live there? But making the final decision will be based on a range of factors from price, to availability, as well as the services provided. In this Guide to Care Homes in Essex we try and start the search for you.

The first decision is around the type of support required: care homes are classified as either Residential or Nursing care homes.  The former provides day to day support but not 24/7 medical care unlike a nursing care home.  Both types may also provide Dementia care services.

Other considerations may include beloved family pets, range of activities provided by the care home, price and location.

The range here includes larger purpose-built care homes, often owned and run by big companies, to small owner managed care homes and those run by charities.

Care home ratings provided by the Care Quality Commission are included along with facts about services. Good luck with your search.

FAQs on Essex Care Homes

What are the different types of care home to choose from?

There are 2 types of care home: a residential care home provides additional support for every day tasks such as washing and dressing, taking medication etc.,  A nursing care home will have 24/7 nursing care on the premises.  Both types of care home may also have specialist Dementia units.

How much does a care home in Essex cost?

The average cost of a care home in Essex ranges from £1100 per week to £1900 per week.  The cost is based on individual needs, with more specialist care such as dementia care being the more expensive.

How do we pay for a care home place?

If your parents or relatives currently have more than £23,500 in assets they will be funding their own place in a care home.  Surrey County Council will fund in part or full for someone with less than this.  In some cases, the NHS will also fund a care home place.  IT is a good idea to have a care needs assessment from the council before moving in to a care home.

How do we find specialist dementia care homes in Essex?

There is a good selection of care homes in Essex that provide Dementia care.  You can look on Lottie.org and/or the Care Quality Commission websites to find a list of relevant care homes.
