Holidays, vacations and excursions are the subject of a fun and upbeat conversation in this episode. Age Space’s Annabel James and broadcaster & journalist, Daisy McAndrew speak to Silver Travel adviser, Kelly Gallagher (https://silvertraveladvisor.com/). They talk about the cost benefits to travelling out of season, the challenges of solo travel and the dreaded ‘single supplement’, and how travel companies and advisors are upping their game to encourage a mature customer base to holiday with them.
Holidays and travel in later life
Today’s discussion focused on travel and holidays, particularly for the over-50s. Kerry Gallagher, Managing Director of Silver Travel Advisor, shared her insights into how travel is evolving for this generation and how her company supports their needs.
Kerry explained that Silver Travel Advisor was established 15 years ago to offer genuine travel advice through user reviews and articles from experienced travellers aged over 50. About five years ago, the company expanded into a full-service travel agency. Now, alongside trusted recommendations, they also help customers book their holidays directly.
With people living longer and enjoying extended retirements, Kerry highlighted that travel trends among older people have shifted significantly. Long-stay holidays, especially during the winter months to escape colder climates, have become increasingly popular. Older travellers also benefit from flexible schedules, allowing them to travel outside peak seasons for better prices. Kerry noted a rise in last-minute bookings and a growing mentality of seizing opportunities to travel now rather than waiting. She also mentioned the amusing new trend of “SKI holidays” – Spending Kids’ Inheritance.
Another trend Kerry discussed is the growing demand for “SPIN” holidays, or Special Interest holidays. Travellers are increasingly seeking experiences that allow them to pursue hobbies like photography, painting, cookery, walking, or bird watching while abroad. Kerry noted that interest in these types of holidays has grown significantly in recent years.
Accessibility for travellers with mobility issues has also improved. Kerry emphasised that the travel industry is much better now at providing clear information and options for different levels of support, from accessible hotel rooms to fully assisted holidays with carers. Silver Travel Advisor works closely with trusted partners and organisations such as Dementia Adventure to ensure travellers with specific needs can enjoy supportive and memorable holidays.
Solo travel is another area that Silver Travel Advisor supports extensively. Kerry shared that about a third of their customers are solo travellers, either by choice or circumstance. She recommended options like small group tours and cruises, where travellers can easily find companionship and share experiences. Cruises are particularly solo-friendly, often offering dedicated social activities and dining arrangements for single travellers.
Addressing the challenge of single supplements, Kerry acknowledged that while they still exist, there are ways to minimise them. Some travel companies offer room-sharing options, while others run no-supplement promotions. Kerry advised working with a knowledgeable travel agent who can help identify the best deals and times to book.
Kerry also touched on travel assistance services, reassuring listeners that although occasional issues make headlines, the majority of experiences are positive. She encouraged travellers not to hesitate in requesting help at airports and during flights, as these services are designed to make travel less stressful and more accessible.
The topic of travel insurance came up as well. While Silver Travel Advisor does not sell insurance, Kerry said they work with recommended providers who specialise in policies for older travellers. She stressed the importance of declaring all pre-existing conditions honestly to ensure full coverage and avoid potential issues when travelling.
Sustainable travel is increasingly important to travellers, and Kerry discussed how the industry is responding. She highlighted options like no-fly holidays, cruises departing from the UK, and the growing focus on supporting local communities. Cruise lines are also working hard to lower their carbon emissions, and some now operate with carbon neutrality while in port.
For those considering their first cruise, Kerry offered practical advice: choose a cabin midship on a higher deck for better stability. She explained that while larger ships offer extensive facilities and are great for multi-generational families, smaller ships provide a more intimate experience.
Looking at popular destinations, Kerry said Spain, Greece, and Italy remain firm favourites for European travel. Vienna has become increasingly popular for city breaks, and for long-haul adventures, Japan, Vietnam, and Thailand are top choices, offering a blend of culture, adventure, and relaxation.
Finally, Kerry explained that paying for holidays is more flexible than ever. Travellers can typically secure their booking with a deposit and spread the remaining balance through manageable monthly payments, making dream holidays more accessible.
Throughout the conversation, Kerry Gallagher’s advice offered a reassuring and inspiring look at the many possibilities for travel in later life, with Silver Travel Advisor there to support every step of the journey.
