The Best National Trust Properties in Surrey to Visit With Elderly Relatives

National trust venues in Surrey

The National Trust is the largest environment and heritage conservation charity in the UK. They own and run several properties and gardens across Surrey.

It may be worth considering investing in a National Trust membership. Membership means free entry to over 500 National Trust sites and free parking. Discounted senior membership is available for over 60s who have held a membership for at least ten years.

Claremont Landscape Garden

With nearly 300 years of history, the eighteenth century garden at Claremont is a beautiful place to visit. Once the countryside retreat of English Queens, Claremont has always been somewhere to escape to and enjoy the outdoors.

Across the garden there are many attractions to discover including: a large, turf amphitheatre, serpentine lake, grotto and camellia terrace. The changing seasons and thoughtful Claremont design mean the gardens always look different and can be visited and enjoyed frequently.

There is a diverse programme of events for families and a children’s adventure play area. The cafe offers a delicious array of freshly baked cakes and lunches. Dogs on leads are welcome in the winter months (1 October to 30th April); they are welcome all year in the cafe.

Accessibility Assitance

There are three blue-badge parking spaces with level access, 10 metres from kiosk and 20 metres from the cafe. At the cafe there is ramp access, a disabled toilet and an outside seating area.

An access for all path goes around the circumference of the lake. There are also braille and large print guides available from the entrance kiosk.

Leith Hill Place

Once home to one of England’s greatest composers, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Leith Hill Place is an atmospheric house with gorgeous views of the Surrey countryside. Charles Darwin also conducted some of his studies in the grounds.

For nearly 40 years, Leith Hill Place was used as a school boarding house but in 2019 opened to the public. The house holds lots of history, and is a relaxing day out. The soundscape tour involves listening to classical music and is said to be very relaxing. There is a cafe serving tea and cake which can be enjoyed looking out over the view.

Accessibility Assitance

Wheelchair users can be dropped off outside the house. There are also parking spaces for Blue Badge holders near the site.

There is a ramp at the front door, and the grounds are level with wide doorways. An accessible version of the soundscape tour is available for those who cannot take the stairs.

Box Hill, Tadworth

Box Hill is the perfect place for a family walk, exploring the Surrey Hills. The site boasts panoramic views across the beautiful surrounding countryside. There is an abundance of wildlife to spot, from blue butterflies to mini beasts to colourful wild flowers.

Dogs are welcome but it is asked they are kept on leads where livestock are grazing. You can bring a picnic to enjoy with the view.

The only charges at Box Hill are for parking. ยฃ1.50 per hour for first 2 hours; ยฃ4 for up-to 4 hours; ยฃ6 for 5 hours and above.

Accessibility Assistance

Disabled parking spots are available. There are accessible paths to viewpoints and along the length of the North Downs Way. South Scarp is very steep so we recommend avoiding this area if you are walking with someone very elderly or in a wheelchair.
