Over 60s Discounts for Travel in Sussex

Bus Travel

Elderly people have access to free bus travel across the country to assist them in getting around. This becomes available nationally once they reach the state pension age. You can find out more information about this scheme and how to apply by visiting your local county council’s website through the details provided below.

  • Between 9:30am – 11:00pm on weekdays
  • All day on weekends and bank holidays
  • Anywhere in England on local bus services only

Train Travel

A Senior Railcard is available for over 60s to purchase for £30 on the Senior Railcard’s Website. This card will entitle the holder to a third off of train travel costs for a year. It’s important to have the Railcard with you at all times during travel to avoid being fined. Railcards can also be purchased in-person at most stations (be sure to bring a passport photo to be used).

There are also a number of Railcard partners that holders can receive discounts from, including Haven Holidays and Virgin Wines.

Coach Travel

Over 60s can purchase a Senior Coachcard from National Express to become eligible for a third off of Standard & Flexible tickets for coach travel.

A National Express Coachcard can be purchased for £12.50 (+£2.50 p&p) per year. Visit the National Express website for more information and complete the online form to register for a Coachcard.

Blue Badge Scheme

A Blue Badge holder is entitled to car parking concessions if they or a passenger has severe mobility problems. This is a national scheme and has co-operating organisations and car parking spaces across the country.

Leisure Discounts for the Over 60s in Sussex

National Trust

Seniors can receive 25% off of the National Trust’s membership scheme. To be eligible for this discount, somebody has to be over 60 years old and have held an existing membership with the National Trust for the last three consecutive years. As this is an opt-in discount scheme, you will need to get in touch by calling them on 0344 800 1895 to add the discount to your membership.

Sheringham - National Trust Discounts for Over 60s

Sussex is home to some incredible National Trust properties that the membership will grant you unlimited access to; including Bodiam Castle, Sheffield Park & Garden and Uppark House. Over 60s are eligible to 20% off of a single pair of glasses in specific range as well as NHS-funded eye tests from Specsavers.

Health and Leisure Discounts for Elderly People in Sussex


Boots provide increased Advantage Card points to over 60s, alongside 25% off of selected prescription glasses and sunglasses.

There are Boots stores available across the whole of Sussex. You can find your nearest one through their store finder.

Optical Express

You can receive 20% off of complete glasses at Optical Express whenever you spend over £69.

NHS Prescription Pre-payment Certificate (PPC)

A Prescription Pre-Payment Certificate scheme is offered by the NHS which is described as a “prescription season ticket”.

Two options are available:

  1. The 3-month PPC costs £31.25 and will save you money if you need more than 3 prescribed items in 3 months.

  2. The 12-month PPC costs £111.60 and will save you money if you need more than 11 prescribed items in a year.
